PRIVIES & COMPOSTING TOILETS (PDF)
(1) Pit privies shall be constructed to prevent a health hazard and prevent insect and rodent accessibility, and shall not be located less than (50) feet from a water supply or less than (20) feet from any habitable building or property line.
(2) Composting toilets must be certified by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) to be in compliance with NSF Standard 41, and be published in their "Listing of Certified Wastewater Recycle/Reuse and Water Conservation Devices", before they may be used for disposal of human excreta by non-water carriage methods.
(3) A pit privy or composting toilet shall not be permitted for a facility where the facility has running water available unless there is an acceptable means to dispose of wastewater.

Non-Liquid Treatment Systems

This category of wastewater systems consists of products most commonly referred to as composting toilets. Composting toilets use little or no water and do not require hookup to a sewer or septic system. They work by providing an enclosed environment that allows the natural process of aerobic decomposition to occur. Basically, this is the same process used in nature, where wildlife droppings are decomposed and converted into nutrients.

Composting toilets normally compost anything organic, including human waste, food scraps, egg shells, paper and cardboard, lawn clippings, and other small garden trimmings. If you are considering the use of such a product, check with your local public health authority to find out what requirements they may have governing the installation and use of such a product. Most states and counties will require that a compost toilet be certified in accordance with NSF/ANSI Standard 41.
